A Homerun-er-A Run Home
A few years ago when my daughter Brenda was 7 or 8, she was a bit of a star on her girl’s softball team. Not only was she a good player, (shortstop and first base) but she could also “run like the wind.” One game she came to bat with a runner on first base and hit a ball all the way into the outfield!
With a cloud of dust, bubble gum chewing, pony tail flying Brenda was off in a flash, heading for first base and the runner in front of her. Meanwhile, the softball was still being kicked and thrown around the outfield, as the girls circled the bases. By the time Brenda rounded second base she caught up to the runner in front of her, then tried to pass her at third base.
By now, we parents were yelling to her that she couldn’t pass the runner and to get back to third. Finally, in came the throw toward the catcher and her Wilson Catchers Mitt. “Safe” was the first runner, so the catcher threw the ball to third base. Seeing another opportunity to run, Brenda bolted toward home, beat the throw and scored! So close to a homerun-if only the other runner was faster…
