The Memories of Sandlot Baseball

baseball and American flagWhat kid who has ever picked up a baseball glove or baseball bat hasn’t played some form of “sandlot” baseball? It might have been a field with the weeds trampled down and the base paths mowed, (even though that same kid would never mow his own lawn) a city street & using a stick for a bat, or maybe a good sized backyard hoping you don’t break a window.

Whatever or wherever the field was, you can be sure that there were a lot of kids and a lot of yelling and cheering. A variety of materials or objects could be used for the bases and home plate. We used a tree for second base and an old Rawlings first base mitt for home plate. Just about anything would do. In the city, a tail light from a Chevy could easily be third base with a manhole cover as home plate. If the Chevy owner had to take “third base,” a glove from the batting team would certainly work. It’s amazing what kids come up with.

Although there have been many changes to baseball over the years, the kids and their imaginations of “sandlot baseball” really haven’t changed all that much, and that’s a good thing…
